What is "Body Doubling" and Why Do ADHDers Love It?

Updated: Oct 17, 2023

Have you ever noticed how much less painful it is to do things we don't want to do, while in the presence of someone else?

Do you miss the days of school when you would do assignments in the library with your peers in a contained, focused environment where others were studying at the same time as you?

Me too. And I want to share a tool that has been a game-changer for many folks with ADHD, including myself - Body Doubling. 🙌

So, what's body doubling? Well, it's like having a workout buddy, but for your brain! It involves having another person present while you're tackling a task. This friendly presence, your 'body double', can be right there with you or even on the other side of the screen. Their company helps us to start, focus, and see tasks through to the end. 🎯

This strategy targets our executive function, helping us move through task initiation paralysis, and any emotional dysregulation we might be having around a tedious tasks, and have a more enjoyable experience together. It's a bit like having a gentle nudge keeping us accountable, reducing the chances of avoidance or procrastination. PLUS, at Catalyst Club - we make it as fun as possible. That includes games on our structured breaks, good music, celebrating together, and getting to genuinely know and support one another. It's not just for those with ADHD. Anyone who struggles with focus can benefit from body doubling. And no, it's not mirroring where you copy someone else's behaviors. Instead, it's about creating a supportive environment that promotes focus and productivity. 🚀

Now, I know what you're thinking - "But is there any research on this?" There is limited research, but anecdotal reports suggest its incredible utility. Even a 2019 research review hinted that social encounters could activate dopamine reward circuitry, which could hugely benefit those of us with ADHD. 🧠💡

So, let's talk benefits! Body doubling:

  1. Reduces ADHD stigma through shared experiences. 👥

  2. Provides modeling of on-task behavior. 📝

  3. Reduces isolation. 🤗

  4. Increases a sense of calm and improves accountability. ☮️

  5. Provides an incentive to complete tasks and offers motivation. 🏆

  6. Allows for feedback from the body double. 👍

But, as with all things, there are potential drawbacks like social distraction, feelings of embarrassment, and the risk of becoming dependent on body doubling. But remember, it's all about balance!

Some folks even compare body doubling to wearing reading glasses—it just helps their brans operate better. It's about finding what works best for you. 🕶️🌈

Now, here comes the really exciting part - Virtual Body Doubling! This involves having a companion present via video chat or live streaming platforms. It's a fantastic way to connect, activate, motivate, and regulate emotions, all while staying in your comfort zone. Just remember to protect your online identity! 💻🌐

At Catalyst Club, we're all about embracing these tools that can transform our lives. That's why we offer body-doubling sessions from Monday to Friday. We believe that the more you use this tool, the more effective it becomes. And guess what? We're also looking for members who are willing to host sessions! With our members spread across the globe, we want to ensure everyone has ample opportunities for the benefits of body doubling. 🌍✨

➕ Plus, we have an 'always-open' coworking room available for anyone who wants to body double. Simply open up Catalyst Club on your computer, let folks know in the chat when you're going to be using it, and others can join you for some body doubling action! 🎉

So, whether you're struggling with starting a task, staying focused, or completing it, give body doubling a try. It might just be the game-changer you've been looking for.

Remember, you are not alone in this journey. We hope you will join us in growing together, one task at a time! 💪💖
